The General Ledger (GL) Accountant plays a crucial role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of a company's financial records.

About The Role

He/she acts as the guardian of the company's financial records. The GL Accountant ensures accuracy by reviewing transactions, reconciling accounts, and crafting journal entries. He/She also plays a key role in the month-end and year-end closing processes, making sure the financial picture is clear and reliable for informed decision-making.

Overall, the General Ledger Accountant is the backbone of a company's financial record-keeping system. Their meticulous attention to detail and focus on accuracy ensure the financial information used for decision-making is reliable and trustworthy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Ensuring Data Accuracy: This is a top priority. GL accountant meticulously reviews and verifies the accuracy of financial transactions posted to the general ledger. He/she double-checks for errors and inconsistencies to ensure the data reflects the company's true financial position.
  2. Reconciling Accounts: Regularly reconciling accounts is essential for the GL Accountant. This involves comparing account balances in the general ledger with external sources like bank statements and vendor invoices. Identifying and resolving any discrepancies ensures the accuracy of financial statements.
  3. Preparing Journal Entries: Journal entries are the backbone of the general ledger. The GL Accountant creates these entries to record financial transactions that don't have a direct one-to-one correspondence with a general ledger account. This includes things like accruals, prepayments, and depreciation.
  4. Supporting Month-End and Year-End Close Processes: Month-end and year-end closing involve crucial financial tasks. The GL Accountant plays a vital role by preparing necessary journal entries, reconciling accounts, and ensuring all financial records are accurate and complete for the closing process.
  5. Analyzing Financial Information: While not solely focused on analysis, the GL Accountant does analyze financial data to some extent. He/she may identify trends, investigate discrepancies, and provide insights that contribute to the overall financial health of the company.

In addition to these core duties, the GL Accountant will also:

  1. Collaborate with other departments on accounting-related issues.
  2. Assist with internal and external audits.
  3. Participate in the implementation of new accounting software or processes.
  4. Help prepare financial reports and budgets.
Your Experience & Skills

Experience

  1. A Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  2. Minimum of 3 years experience in general ledger accounting.
  3. Familiarity with internal audit procedures.
  4. Knowledge of financial regulations relevant to Tourism and Hospitality.
  5. Experience with budgeting and forecasting.

Technical Skills

  1. Accounting Principles: Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and their application in recording transactions.
  2. General Ledger Expertise: Proven ability to manage the general ledger, ensuring accurate and complete posting of financial transactions.
  3. Journal Entries: Experience in preparing complex journal entries for various accounting activities like depreciation, accruals, and prepayments.
  4. Account Reconciliation: Skilled at reconciling bank statements, accounts payable, and accounts receivable to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  5. Financial Software: Proficiency in accounting software suites like QuickBooks.

  1. Attention to Detail: A meticulous eye for accuracy is crucial to catch errors and maintain data integrity.
  2. Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze financial data to identify trends and potential issues.
  3. Communication: Strong written and verbal communication to collaborate with colleagues, explain financial statements, and address queries from internal and external stakeholders.
