Introduction NORTH‑WEST UNIVERSITY (MAHIKENG CAMPUS) – DIVISION: STUDENT LIFE – HEALTH CARE CENTREPOSITION NUMBER: M POSITION: HEAD NURSE PEROMNESGRADE: P7EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENTLOCATION: MAFIKENG - CAPITAL CITY Position Summary The Head Nurse will provide professional and managerial expertise at the Mahikeng Campus Health Care Clinic, overseeing occupational health, primary health care, and wellness programs for students, staff, and contract workers. The role requires leadership in clinical care, quality improvement, financial stewardship, and stakeholder collaboration in accordance with South African health regulations and NHS policies. Job Description Key Responsibilities Clinical services: Manage and oversee the Primary Health Care programme and general functioning of the Primary Health Care facility. Providing clinical service of a high quality, according to DOH and NWU policies and guidelines. Maintaining confidentiality and complying with POPIA and the Nursing Act. Daily comprehensive health care through clinical diagnosis, treatment, and care. Managing Primary Health Care services according to Department of Health guidelines, protocols, and policies. Services include chronic disease management, CCMDD programme management, antenatal services, TB, HIV management, and other communicable diseases, rendering emergency services, treatment of minor ailments, and contraceptive services. Identifying health tendencies and possible health risks that can be detrimental to the NWU community. Referral of clients to internal and external stakeholders to ensure the best possible care. Quality improvement: Auditing data and patient records, risk assessments, and identifying training opportunities. Establishing and reviewing policies, systems, activities, structures, and procedures for health promotion at NWU. Optimising resources for quality client care. Financial management and cost containment to ensure budget allocation meets current needs. Managing assets of the CHCC with monthly and yearly asset control. Drug supply management to reduce wastage and ensure pharmaceutical availability. Compile and submit regular reports on health care services to stakeholders such as the Department of Health and relevant committees, in line with the Annual Performance Plan. Collaborate with stakeholders to improve the overall health programme and negotiate support for new health needs. Quarterly audits of Minor ailments, Female reproductive care, Male Health, TB and HIV/AIDS records, laboratory specimens, patient records, bi‑annual stock counts, and pharmacy stock losses. Educational responsibilities: Ensure ethical standards, compile unit reports, analyse data, maintain record security, and support asset holders and procurement processes. Ensure clinicians are registered and licenses are up to date. Assist with research conducted by the Health Care Centre and NWU, studying disease trends to target mitigation strategies. Occupational Health and Safety: Cooperate with management and OHS officials, conduct audits, evacuation drills, and ensure safe disposal of sharps and medical waste, practising aseptic techniques. People Management: Develop leadership culture, foster participative leadership, improve team cohesion, implement a strategic workforce plan, and remove engagement barriers. Professional Development: Attend seminars, conferences, webinars, and training sessions to stay current in primary health care. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree / Diploma (R425) in General Nursing – Nursing and Midwifery. Post‑basic qualification in Nursing (R48) specialising in clinical nursing science, health assessment, treatment, and care (primary health care). Dispensing course specialising in dispensing medicines in line with the Essential Medicine List. NIMART Certified – Nurse Initiated Management of Anti‑Retroviral Therapy. PICT/HTS Trained – Provider Initiated Counselling and Testing / HIV and AIDS Testing Services. Professional registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in comprehensive primary health care. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience managing and operating a primary health care facility. Recommendation / Added Advantage Professional membership with the South African Association of Campus Health Services (SAACHS). Key Functional / Technical Competencies Knowledge of National Indicator Data Set (NIDS). Knowledge of District Health Information System. Knowledge of Ideal Clinic Realisation Model. Knowledge of National Core Standards. High‑level nursing process competency. Knowledge of National Health Act and other relevant legislation. Excellent communication skills, including multilingual proficiency. Sound knowledge of financial management processes and policies. Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Good report writing and statistical analysis. Good presentation skills. Problem‑solving skills with a results‑oriented approach. Behavioural Competencies Interpersonal relationship skills with a high regard for teamwork and negotiation. People and conflict management, and ability to maintain confidentiality. High regard for student‑centered services and customer care. Able to work under pressure. Therapeutic use of self. Task‑oriented and effective time management.
