Overview

The role reporting to the Senior Finance Manager will support the overall mandate of Strategic Finance Initiatives and Accounting Advisory (SFIAA): be at the forefront of developments around financial reporting and regulatory requirements, support the control structure by ensuring effective Finance policies and guidelines, and act as an effective business partner to Finance and cross-functional teams to support activities and process improvements.

Responsibilities
  • Development and maintenance of Finance policies and operating guidelines
  • Establish, strengthen, and reinforce the control structure by developing and maintaining Finance policies and operating guidelines
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure Finance policies are aligned with organizational goals
  • Identify process improvement opportunities in various Finance processes and develop solutions
  • Ensure Finance policies comply with regulatory requirements and corporate guidelines
  • Communicate Finance policies and guidelines to relevant stakeholders and provide training as needed
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Finance policies and recommend changes or updates as necessary
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on Finance policies and guidelines and provide guidance to stakeholders
  • Accounting advisory
  • Provide technical accounting guidance to Finance teams on complex issues, propose solutions and develop accounting memos, policies or guidelines
  • Lead impact assessments of newly issued accounting or sustainability standards and interpretations, including developing and executing implementation plans
  • Lead system implementation/enhancement activities if necessary
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Finance, Actuarial, Operations, etc.) to address accounting issues and implement standards
  • Review financial statements and disclosures for compliance with accounting guidelines and regulations
  • Monitor emerging accounting issues and trends and provide insights to stakeholders
  • Engage with External/Internal Auditors on accounting matters as needed
  • Other Finance initiatives
  • Support third-party risk management through financial viability assessments of vendors and contracts reviews of supplier arrangements
  • Develop templates and MEUCs to facilitate process improvements within SFIAA
  • Support Finance Academy activities
  • Support Finance teams on other organizational strategies requiring technical accounting knowledge, including serving as project lead or subject matter expert for potential systems implementation and enhancements
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate Degree in accounting or commerce
  • At least 4 years of relevant accounting and financial reporting experience
  • CPA designation is a requirement; actuarial training or designations are a plus
  • Exposure to IFRS 17 and IFRS 9 implementation for insurance companies is a plus
  • Knowledge of business and corporate finance and actuarial systems
  • Knowledge of insurance industry, products and related accounting issues
  • Preferred skills: ability to solve problems with multiple constraints, intellectual agility, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to work under fluctuating deadlines, identify inefficiencies and develop process improvements, and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
