CLIENT BACKGROUND

Our client provides accounting solutions for growing software startups, helping SaaS companies streamline their books and access decision-ready insights quickly. They focus on fast and accurate month-end closes, reconciliations, financial statements, and SaaS-specific needs such as revenue recognition and deferred revenue. Their approach emphasizes timely, reliable financials, automation, and accuracy, making them a trusted partner for finance leaders and startup teams.

Unlike traditional firms that only appear during tax season, our client acts as a year-round partner with a startup mindset, combining precision with adaptability. They leverage tools like Xero, Stripe, and Google Sheets to build efficient processes that save time and reduce errors. With over a decade of experience in accounting and finance at high-growth startups, their founder is committed not only to client success but also to developing a resilient, growth-minded team of accountants.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Own the month-end close for about 4 simple cash-basis clients (light accruals), including reconciliations, journal entries, and preparation of financial statements
• Support month-end close for about 6 more complex clients by preparing workpapers, schedules, and reconciliations for final review by the Controller
• Perform first-level reviews of junior/admin assistants’ deliverables (basic entries, downloads, reconciliations, workpapers), identifying errors, flagging missing support, and providing feedback
• Conduct flux/variance analysis to explain key movements month-over-month
• Maintain close workpapers to a consistent standard so they are audit-ready and easy to follow
• Assist in documenting recurring processes in checklists or editing existing SOPs to support delegation of tasks to junior staff
• Support process improvements that improve accuracy, save time, or reduce errors (e.g., Google Sheets formulas, automations, reporting approaches)
• Support internal projects such as workflow standardization, clean data migrations, or implementing new tools
• Research accounting rules (basic US GAAP, SaaS nuances such as revenue recognition and deferred revenue) as needed to support unusual transactions
• Monitor and support sales tax compliance, including reviewing automation outputs (Avalara, TaxJar) and assisting with filings and payments
• Allocate roughly 30–50% of time to review responsibilities, with the balance on month-end close and ad hoc projects
• Participate in onboarding by initially performing some of the same tasks as juniors to learn processes, then shift focus toward review and oversight

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field
• At least 5 years of US accounting experience in a US firm
• Background in SaaS or software startup companies is a strong plus
• Proficiency with Xero and Stripe is required
• Knowledge of QuickBooks Online (QBO) and NetSuite is a plus
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Strong foundation in US GAAP, accrual accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, and fluctuation analysis
• Familiarity with revenue recognition under ASC 606, deferred revenue roll-forwards, Stripe/Chargebee reconciliations, foreign currency transactions, and MRR/ARR concepts is an advantage
• Strong interest in continuous learning, with comfort using tools like ChatGPT for support and basic knowledge of or interest in learning Python scripting and SQL

• Personal laptop or desktop computer during the first three months, with a Mac provided thereafter
