Head of Credit & Portfolio Risk, OpenPower

About 1882 Energy Ventures

1882 Energy Ventures is a venture studio accelerating the global energy transition by building and scaling startups that decentralize energy systems—reshaping how homes, businesses, mobility, and networks are powered. By advancing decentralization, we drive decarbonization, enhance energy efficiency, and fuel long-term economic growth and development in the Philippines and beyond.

About the Role

As the Head of Credit & Portfolio Risk, you will lead how OpenPower evaluates, approves, and monitors financing for distributed renewable energy projects. Your mandate is to design the credit and portfolio risk frameworks that give investors confidence while enabling developers to scale.

This role combines credit underwriting (developer evaluation, SME credit scoring, project screening) with portfolio oversight (governance, monitoring, early warning systems). You’ll build the policies, tools, and models that define how capital flows into the SME and midscale solar sector, ensuring discipline while supporting growth.

You’ll collaborate closely with the Investment, Product, and Developer teams to align risk appetite with expansion, and you’ll be a key counterpart to investors and regulators. This is a foundational leadership role where the frameworks you design will directly shape how OpenPower scales across markets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement credit policies for developer evaluation, SME credit scoring, and project eligibility
  • Lead credit approval processes across origination, developer onboarding, and project screening
  • Design and refine models that assess repayment capacity, developer track record, and contract structures
  • Chair OpenPower’s Risk Committee and oversee periodic portfolio reviews
  • Build monitoring systems, early warning indicators, and portfolio reporting dashboards
  • Coordinate with legal, technical, and investment teams on compliance, covenants, and remedial actions
Governance & Frameworks
  • Define OpenPower’s risk appetite, approval thresholds, and escalation protocols for new products and markets
  • Establish standardized tools for project diligence and ongoing risk assessment
  • Align risk frameworks with investor mandates, fund structures, and regulatory requirements
Stakeholder Alignment & Team Coordination
  • Align risk frameworks with investor mandates, fund structures, and regulatory expectations
  • Collaborate with Product and Data teams to embed risk insights into platform workflows
  • Support fundraising and investor due diligence efforts through clear risk articulation
  • Stay up to date with evolving risks in renewable energy financing, regulations, and developer ecosystems
  • Provide regular feedback to improve platform features, investment terms, and field practices based on observed risk patterns
Requirements
  • 8+ years of experience in risk, credit, or investment roles, preferably in renewable energy, infrastructure, or SME finance
  • Strong understanding of technical and commercial risks in rooftop solar or distributed energy projects
  • Experience evaluating SME credit, EPC/developer capabilities, and contract structuring
  • Familiarity with fund compliance, portfolio monitoring, and credit policies across multiple markets
  • Demonstrated ability to build and operationalize risk frameworks for early-stage or fast-scaling businesses
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, able to translate complex risks into actionable policies
  • Comfortable working in dynamic, high-growth environments with cross-functional teams
  • Passionate about enabling clean energy access through scalable and responsible financing
  • Quick to learn about new industries and technologies, and able to adjust and pivot when presented with new information such as regulatory limitations, market feedback, technological innovations, etc.
  • Entrepreneurial, curious, and deeply passionate about making a difference towards some of the world’s most important problems and opportunities, especially in the energy sector
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive strategic initiatives
  • Ability to inspire and motivate employees towards shared vision and goals, demonstrated by exceptional team culture built
  • Advanced communication skills and stakeholder engagement with internal (e.g. Board, C-suite) and external stakeholders (e.g. investors, commercial partners, and B2B and B2C customers)
