Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To lecture undergraduate and honours modules in Physics. Carry out research in one of the Departmental research focus areas: Astrophysics/Space Science/Astronomy

Responsibilities

• Teaching
  Facilitate and administer the learning process for students in physics modules presented by the North West University at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
• Review and design academic curricula.

• Research
  Carry out research and supervise postgraduate students.
• Preference will be given to Stellar Astrophysics/Exo-Planet Research.

• Community Engagement
  Contribute to community engagement and be involved in the departmental administrative functions.

Minimum Requirements

• A doctoral degree (NQF level 10) in Materials/ Space Science & Astrophysics.
• A minimum of three (3) year teaching experience.

Added Advantages & Preferences

• At least 3 publications in peer reviewed journals with at least 1 as first author.
• Participation in local or international conferences.
• Must be registered with South African Institute of Physics (SAIP).

Key Functional/ Technical Competencies

• Effective lecturing of undergraduate and post-graduate physics theory courses at university level.
• Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities; ability to work under pressure and deadlines.
• Good interpersonal skills; preferably knowledge to use a telescope.
• Good programming skills.

Key Behavioural Competencies

• Adherence to rules and work regulations.
• Cooperative nature, good-natured attitude, and ability to encourage teamwork.
• Sensitivity and understanding of the needs and feelings of others.

Remuneration

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with NWU policy guidelines.
