SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Mason specializes in the maintenance of buildings, headstones, and landscape constructions under the management of the Facilities Management Specialist. Maintains the site's buildings (cemetery, monuments) and headstones (repairing, replacing, cleaning, sanding, gilding); repairs/restores walls; and installs borders and paving stones.

  1. Maintains and cleans headstones, markers, and medallions (30%)

  2. Cleans, polishes, engraves, and gilds stone.

  3. Replaces, fixes, and maintains headstones, including removing and replacing back into the plot area.
  4. Repairing headstones (gluing).
  5. Replaces markers and medallions as needed.

  6. Cemetery Infrastructure Maintenance (30%)

  7. Cleans and maintains the cemetery's stone structures (paving stones, slabs) and other surfaces.

  8. Applies anti-moss products.
  9. Maintains the masonry of surrounding walls, basins, fountains, and steps.
  10. Seals stones.
  11. Polishes bronze and gilds other metals.
  12. Maintains the site's perimeter fence
  13. Cleans and maintains water drains
  14. Performs basic road maintenance (blowing, sweeping, painting, sign maintenance)

  15. Building Maintenance (20%)

  16. Performs basic maintenance on all buildings not open to the public, including service area and on-site housing.

  17. Maintains facades, roofs, interior, and exterior paint.
  18. Installs fences, bars, gates and doors.
  19. Small maintenance and miscellaneous maintenance

  20. Renovation (15%)

  21. Creation/demolition of walls, slabs, borders, laying of floor materials

  22. Other tasks required according to needs (5%)

Education

  • Completion of Secondary School is required.
  • Masonry NCI / NC II TESDA Certification

Prior Work experience·

  • 2 to 3 years' experience in masonry required
  • Experience working with noble materials (marble, granite, etc.) desired.

Language Proficiency

  • ILR Level 2-3 for English Language
  • ILR Level 4 for Tagalog Language

Post Entry Training

  • Vocational training in stone crafting, cutting, and engraving
  • Training in gold leaf gilding
  • CACES Nacelle (Aerial Work Platform Safety Certification) or local host country equivalent
  • First aid at work certificate (SST)
  • Training in gestures and postures (back belt and knee brace) and wearing PPE

Knowledge

  • Good knowledge of masonry techniques to maintain a range of cemetery and monument physical features (paving, sandblasting, engraving, polishing, gilding, etc.).
  • Knowledge of maintenance and use of noble materials (marble, granite, bronze, wood, limestone, etc.) and gilding techniques.
  • Knowledge of proper application of anti-moss products, water repellents, and paint.
  • Ability to use manual, electric, gas-powered, and pneumatic tools appropriate for the job.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Awareness of the risks associated with the profession
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of biodiversity.

Supervision Received

Masons receive assignments from the Facilities Management Specialist either orally or through work orders. The mason is expected to suggest work projects based on his/her own observations and knowledge of the trade. The mason reviews the work to be performed, interprets blueprints or sketches, and decides work methods or processes best suited to complete the work.

Available Guidelines

Guidelines include standard reference materials, product data sheets, service manuals, bulletins, plans and blueprints (original and technical) and ABMC standards.

Exercise of Judgment

The mason performs his/her assignments independently, with little or no work direction. The finished work may be spot checked for adequacy and adherence to accepted trade practices. In decorative work they receive assignments as to end results desired and proceed independently in outlining patterns and designs, determining methods and procedures, computing materials, and accomplishing assigned tasks.

Nature, Level, and Purpose of Contacts

Maintains contact with cemetery staff (green team, mechanic, etc.), contractors, and visitors (during local events such as Memorial Day, Remembrance Day, etc.). Contacts are to obtain, provide, or exchange factual information regarding projects, and to execute project activities.

Supervision Exercised

While this is a non-supervisory position the incumbent may be required to supervise the work activities of one or more co-workers (including seasonal workers, assistant mason, apprentices, or trainees).

Time Required to Perform Full Range of Duties after Entry into this Position

Three (3) years are required to learn the full range of maintenance tasks expected of the position, to include knowledge of stone and other ABMC-specific materials.

Working Environment

The work environment is mainly outdoors and risks include chemicals, noise, vibrations, burns, cuts, limb crushing, and ocular discomfort. When working outdoors incumbent is subject to weather (dryness, heat, humidity, wind, cold, snow) and risks including falls from height and same-level falls, insect bites, and allergies. Incumbent is subjected to repetitive work and awkward postures and is required to carry heavy loads up to 25kg.
