Position Overview

We are seeking a Bioinformatics Technician to provide scientific and computational support to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) and the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences (AFRIMS). This position supports WRAIR's biomedical research mission, strengthening global health partnerships and contributing to research continuity and operational excellence across AFRIMS sites.

The work will be performed via telework and at various Government or partner locations, including U.S. and host nation installations, local hospitals, surveillance sites, and forward laboratories across the AFRIMS AOR. Beyond Thailand, AFRIMS maintains active projects and workspaces in the Philippines, Cambodia, Nepal, Laos, Vietnam, and Australia, which may also serve as places of performance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide bioinformatics and computational support for research projects involving next-generation sequencing (NGS) and other genomics-based methodologies.
  • Collaborate with AFRIMS and partner institutions to generate, process, and evaluate biomedical and genomic data, ensuring data integrity and accuracy throughout the analysis pipeline.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of bioinformatics workflows and computational tools to support research objectives and data management requirements.
  • Conduct data analysis, visualization, and interpretation of genomic and biomedical datasets using established bioinformatics tools, databases, and scripting languages.
  • Prepare and maintain bioinformatics documentation, reports, and data records in accordance with AFRIMS and WRAIR policies and quality standards.
  • Support the integration of diverse biological data sources (genomic, proteomic, or other omics data) to generate meaningful research insights and deliverables.
  • Contribute to collaborative research discussions by providing technical expertise in computational biology, data management, and analysis methodologies.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable data security, ethical, and regulatory requirements governing the handling of research data.

Necessary Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, Perl, or Java used for bioinformatics applications.
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix operating systems and high-performance computing environments.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret large-scale biological data.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

  • Bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, biology, or a related field with a strong focus on bioinformatics or computational methods.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a bioinformatics or computational biology laboratory setting may be required for entry-level roles.
  • Practical experience working with biological datasets, such as genomic, proteomic, or transcriptomic data is highly valued.
  • Experience with bioinformatics tools and software (e.g., BLAST, Bowtie, SAMtools, FASTA) and databases (e.g., GenBank, Ensembl).
  • Clearance:
    Public Trust - favorable Tier 1 NACI background check completed.
  • Travel Required:
    Continental United States (CONUS) and Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS) travel is anticipated.

Preferred Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

  • Master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related field.
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or federally funded biomedical research programs.
