Outpatient Medical Coder

We're looking for an experienced
Certified Coder
to join our Billing & Coding team. Reporting directly to the Lead Billing and Coding Specialist, this role is responsible for reviewing and coding provider-signed encounters with accuracy, speed, and full compliance. You'll also play a key role in educating providers, ensuring documentation quality, and helping refine service lines as our organization grows.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret medical records to assign accurate diagnosis, procedure, and E/M codes based on national coding guidelines.
• Apply strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology to ensure proper coding of all services.
• Review provider notes daily for completeness and accuracy.
• Follow up with providers and clinical staff to obtain missing information.
• Identify all chargeable items and assign correct CPT/CPT II/HCPCS codes, including appropriate modifiers.
• Review patient claims for demographic and coding accuracy; enter missing information when needed.
• Prioritize tasks effectively to ensure time-sensitive items are completed first.
• Ensure all charges and edits are completed prior to month-end close.
• Collaborate with the AR team to monitor and reduce coding-related denials; develop strategies to support reimbursement accuracy.
• Research coding/billing issues and assist with data analysis for reporting.
• Stay current on all laws, regulations, and updates affecting medical records and coding guidelines.
• Conduct baseline, monthly, and quarterly coding audits; provide education on documentation and coding accuracy in alignment with CMS and federal regulations.
• Serve as a resource and subject-matter expert for providers, clinical staff, and team members.
• Participate in internal meetings, training sessions, and team discussions as needed.

Qualifications

• 2–4+ years of physician coding experience (primary care strongly preferred).
• Coding certification through AHIMA and/or AAPC.
• Hands-on experience with Athena.
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to interact with providers and deliver effective training, feedback, and documentation support.
