Job Summary:

The Ophthalmic Technician provides support to ophthalmologists in delivering high-quality eye care services. The role involves assisting with diagnostic testing, clinical procedures, patient education, and ensuring accurate documentation to enhance patient care and clinic efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care & Support

  • Prepare patients for eye examinations by taking medical history and documenting symptoms.
  • Explain procedures and tests to patients in a clear and professional manner.
  • Assist ophthalmologists during eye exams, treatments, and minor procedures.

Diagnostic Testing

  • Perform and record results of ophthalmic diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, visual field testing, refraction, keratometry, retinal imaging, OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), biometry, and tonometry.
  • Ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.

Clinical Assistance

  • Maintain and calibrate ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
  • Administer eye drops or topical medications as directed by the physician.
  • Assist in preparing patients for laser treatments or minor surgical procedures.

Documentation & Records

  • Accurately chart findings and test results in patient records.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and clinic policies.

Administrative Support

  • Schedule follow-up appointments and coordinate patient flow.
  • Maintain supplies and ensure cleanliness of examination rooms.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional medical or technical training preferred.
  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician (COA, COT, or COMT) is an advantage.
  • Experience in ophthalmology or eye care clinic preferred.
  • Proficiency in operating ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and patient-care skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.
