Core duties

  • Perform diagnostic imaging: Use equipment to create images of specific parts of the body, such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and mammograms.
  • Patient care and preparation: Explain procedures, reduce patient anxiety, take medical histories, and prepare patients for exams.
  • Equipment operation: Position both the patient and the equipment precisely to capture the necessary images and operate the computerized equipment.
  • Radiation safety: Minimize radiation exposure to both patients and staff by using protection techniques, shielding, and knowledge of exposure factors.
  • Image quality control: Evaluate images to ensure they are of diagnostic quality and make adjustments as needed, following established standards.
  • Record keeping: Maintain detailed patient records, documenting care services and results.
  • Collaboration: Work with physicians (radiologists) to evaluate images and determine if additional images are needed.

Required skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to calm nervous patients and collaborate with physicians and other staff.
  • Technical proficiency with a range of imaging equipment.
  • Strong understanding of human anatomy.
  • Ability to adapt to the unique needs of each patient, especially those with limited mobility or in pain.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety principles and infection-control policies.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and maintain detailed records.
