A barista's responsibilities go beyond making drinks and include a variety of duties related to cashiering, inventory, and customer service. Here is a breakdown of a barista's role in each of those areas:

Cashiering and sales

  • Handle payments: Process cash, credit card, and mobile payments using a Point-of-Sale (POS) system.
  • Provide accurate change: Maintain an accurate cash drawer and provide correct change to customers for cash transactions.
  • Promote products: Upsell food and beverage items by informing customers of new products or specials to increase sales.
  • Balance register: Count the money in the cash drawer at the beginning and end of a shift to ensure the amount is correct.

Inventory management

  • Restock supplies: Continuously restock items such as coffee beans, milk, syrups, cups, lids, and pastries during a shift.
  • Conduct stock checks: Periodically perform inventory checks and communicate with management when supplies are running low.
  • Monitor expiration dates: Keep track of product expiration dates to minimize waste.
  • Receive and organize deliveries: Receive and organize incoming stock deliveries and store them appropriately.

Customer relations

  • Greet customers: Welcome customers warmly and create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
  • Answer questions: Inform customers about menu items, ingredients, specials, and brewing methods to help them with their choices.
  • Take accurate orders: Listen carefully to customer orders, including special requests and modifications.
  • Build rapport: Engage in positive and friendly conversation with customers, especially regulars, to build customer loyalty.
  • Handle complaints: Address customer complaints professionally and resolve any issues to ensure a positive experience.

Drink making

  • Prepare beverages: Prepare and serve a wide variety of hot and cold beverages, including espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, teas, and blended drinks, following specific recipes and quality standards.
  • Operate equipment: Operate and maintain coffee-making equipment, such as espresso machines, grinders, and blenders.
  • Ensure quality control: Pay attention to details like grind size, water temperature, and milk texture to ensure every drink meets quality standards.
  • Maintain a clean station: Keep the workstation, equipment, and serving areas clean and sanitized.
