Job Summary

The QA Specialist ensures accuracy, compliance, and integrity of hospital medical coding for inpatient and outpatient records. The role involves auditing coded encounters, validating DRG/APC assignments, and supporting coding teams through education and feedback.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Audit & Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct retrospective and concurrent audits of hospital-coded medical records, including inpatient, outpatient, and day surgery encounters.
  • Validate assigned codes including ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS for accuracy and compliance with official guidelines.
  • Review and confirm correct DRG/APC assignments and sequencing according to professional coding standards and payer regulations.

Compliance & Documentation:

  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, payer requirements, and regulatory coding standards.
  • Maintain audit documentation, scorecards, and quality reports.
  • Stay up to date on coding guidelines, reimbursement changes, and emerging industry updates.

Feedback & Education:

  • Provide detailed feedback to coders based on audit findings.
  • Recommend training topics and support coder education initiatives.
  • Work closely with clinical documentation improvement (CDI) teams to address discrepancies and improve documentation quality.

Process Improvement:

  • Participate in denial management and coding appeal processes.
  • Identify trends and risks related to coding quality and recommend process improvements.
  • Support coding team performance with insights and suggested corrective actions.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Required coding certification (CCS, CIC, CPC, CPMA, or equivalent).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2–5 years of hospital coding experience.
  • Prior QA/auditing experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and DRG/APC grouping and assignment.

Skills:

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret complex clinical documentation and apply coding guidelines accurately.
  • Experience with hospital EMR/coding systems (such as 3M, Optum, Meditech) is a plus.
