About this role. . .

The Collection Specialist is responsible for managing and securing payment for ambulance and other services rendered by the ambulance company by coordinating with insurance providers, healthcare facilities, patients and other payor sources. This role ensures timely and accurate billing, claim submission, and follow-up to maximize revenue and maintain compliance with industry regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

* Insurance Coordination:

  • Verify patient insurance coverage and eligibility for ambulance services.
  • Submit claims to insurance companies promptly and accurately.
  • Monitor claim status and follow up on unpaid or denied claims.
  • Resolve discrepancies and appeal denied claims when necessary.

* Facility Communication:

  • Liaise with hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities to obtain necessary documentation for billing.
  • Ensure accurate patient information and service details are recorded.
  • Coordinate with facility billing departments to resolve outstanding balances.

* Patient Follow-Up:

  • Contact patients regarding outstanding balances and explain billing details.
  • Set up payment plans when appropriate and ensure compliance with company policies.
  • Provide exceptional customer service while handling sensitive financial matters.

* Compliance & Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate records of all communications, claims, and payments.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, state, and federal regulations.
  • Stay updated on insurance policies, billing codes, and industry standards.

Qualifications / Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in healthcare administration or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in medical billing, collections, or insurance follow-up (ambulance or EMS experience a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of insurance claim processes, CPT/HCPCS codes, and medical terminology.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in billing software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Past patient collection experience
  • Medical Billing/ Coding experience
  • Ability to reach weekly measurable goal sets
  • Clear communications skills
  • Proficient knowledge of medical insurance and billing practices
