Overview\:

The CWT Enterprise System Management team is responsible for engineering a globally integrated suite of Monitoring and Observability tools in support of CWT's Travel Management services. Enterprise monitoring is responsible for measuring and reporting infrastructure and business process availability.  Observability encompasses business transaction monitoring, log aggregation, metrics and distributed tracing to gain deeper, ad-hoc insights into system performance.

Job Responsibilities\:

As CWT's infrastructure continues to scale from a monolithic stack to a containerized distributed stack, we face increasing visibility challenges into the health and performance of our systems due to increasing complexity of our hosting environment. Single stack or siloed monitoring tools are no longer able to capture the full depth of the increasingly unpredictable and complex interactions between services. The maturity of the monitoring and introspection tools available to our engineers will determine our ability to correctly anticipate performance bottlenecks, identify anomalous system interactions, and properly diagnose the root cause of incidents, underscoring the overall availability of our business services.

Job Description

The Enterprise System Management team's mission is to design a monitoring and observability framework that can be adopted by DevOps teams for managing application availability and performance.  CWT is in process of building a unified platform for instrumenting, processing, storing and presenting the state of our systems as metrics, traces, profiles, and graphs.  A successful candidate will need to be capable of adopting to different tools and build integrations between application monitoring tools, team collaboration tools, and event management tools.


 

Qualifications

  • 4+ years industry experience with Site Reliability Engineering
  • Experience with infra-coding and continuous delivery pipelines (CI/CD)
  • Experience in one or more scripting languages (Power Shell, Perl, JavaScript, Python, Ruby)
  • Experience with Web Services (REST and SOAP APIs, XML, JSON, HTML)
  • Proficiency with distributed source control, like GitHub
  • Propensity for tackling complicated technical challenges, where end state may not be known
  • Work collaboratively with DevOps and Service owners to development dashboards showing real-time system performance
  • Work collaboratively with business owners and Service Delivery organization to define observability requirements needed for capturing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Practical experience in implementing Whitebox and Blackbox monitoring tools

The preferred candidate:

  • Will have practical hands-on experience administering one or more of the following tools (or similar tools).
  • Whitebox Monitoring Tools:
  • Solarwinds NPM, SAM, WPM, DPA, SRM, NCM, NTA, NetPath, PerfStack
  • CA Application Performance Management (APM)
  • New Relic APM
  • Prometheus (open source)
  • Sensu (open source)

Blackbox Monitoring Tools:

  • Log Aggregation (Splunk, Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana)
  • Stream processing (Flink)
  • Tracing (OpenTracing, LTTnG, Chrome DevTools, Zipkin)
  • Profiling (ruby-prof, perf)
  • Event relay (Kafka)

In addition to the duties and skills referenced above, there is an expectation the selected Engineer will:

  • Continue to develop their own knowledge and skills while on the jobAssist with the skill development of peer
  • Keep informed on latest development in automated information systems
  • Keep informed of applicable CWT ITSM standards and policies
