- Job Summary:
The Instrument Man is responsible for setting up and operating surveying instruments to collect accurate field data for engineering and construction projects. The role requires strong technical skills, fieldwork experience, and the ability to perform computations and drafting tasks related to land surveying.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate total stations to accurately gather survey data.
- Perform closed-loop traverses, reduce data, and run trigonometric leveling.
- Execute COGO (Coordinate Geometry) functions, including inverse, resection, stake line, translation, and rotation of coordinates in the field.
- Read and interpret subdivision plats and metes-and-bounds legal descriptions.
- Conduct map checks and list map errors of closure.
- Locate property corners using a pin finder, recorded deed, subdivision plat, or legal description.
- Perform line work and ensure accurate survey plotting.
- Prepare survey drawings using CAD software—plotting correct distances, labeling survey points, control lines, and calculations.
- Learn and apply CBG Surveying, Inc. field codes accurately.
- Cut survey lines using tools such as a machete, brush hook, or chain saw when required.
- Calibrate and maintain prism rods and other survey instruments.
- Transport and properly store field equipment, including hammers, stakes, lathes, hubs, nails, etc.
- Follow instructions and complete tasks as assigned by the Engineer.
- Work outdoors under varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain) and handle physically demanding tasks.
- Willingness to relocate to project sites as needed.
Qualifications:
- Experience in land surveying or civil engineering fieldwork.
- Proficiency in total station operation and CAD software preferred.
- Strong understanding of survey principles, COGO functions, and legal descriptions.
- Physically fit and able to work long hours in the field.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
