Specific Job Description:

The key job tasks, duties, and responsibilities of Boat Captain are as follows:

  • Communicating with other ship operators, harbor pilots, and port officials regarding navigational safety rules and regulations
  • Manage a crew of deckhands and apprentices who take care of the maintenance of the boat.
  • Monitoring weather conditions to ensure the safety of the vessel and crew
  • Maintaining logs of all activities on board the boat including fuel consumption during trips, repairs made during downtime, and other relevant information
  • Navigating the boat through difficult waters or narrow channels using knowledge of tides, currents, and wind patterns
  • Controlling the speed of the boat using the engine controls or rudder to steer the boat in the desired direction
  • Inspecting equipment and machinery on board the boat for damage or wear and making repairs as necessary
  • Maintaining safety standards on board the vessel by enforcing regulations regarding safety equipment, life preservers, fire drills, and other procedures
  • Maintains cleanliness, orderliness and safety within the working area.
  • Sees to it that work standards, company policies and procedures and RLT Code of Discipline are complied.
  • Observe discipline.
  • Attend meeting and conferences, seminar workshops that may be called by proper authorities of the Company.
  • Set example of good working habits to co-employees and subordinates.
  • Giving assistance to any other areas as needed; and
  • Performs other related functions that may be assigned from time to time by immediate superior.

Qualifications:

  • With Boat Captain 1 or 2 license.
  • Physically able to board tugs.
  • Requires working in confined spaces.
  • Ability and willingness to work independently with little guidance.
  • Ability and willingness to work well alongside others as part of a team.
  • Experience with hand and power tools
  • Experience with pneumatics, hydraulics and electrical systems preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in Operating tug boats in Bay and River.
