A crane operator's job is to safely lift, move, and position materials and equipment using cranes.

Responsibilities of a Crane Operator:

  • Crane operation - Crane operators use controls to move the crane's boom, rotate the superstructure, and raise and lower hooks. They also operate the crane's engine and follow signals from helpers.
  • Safety - Crane operators are responsible for the safety of the work environment and the people on the ground. They place blocks and outriggers to prevent capsizing, and make sure they're within the crane's rigging capacities.
  • Maintenance - Crane operators perform routine maintenance, such as cleaning and lubricating the crane. They also repair the crane as needed.
  • Communication - Crane operators communicate with other workers, contractors, and planners to understand job requirements.
