- Complex disease management:

Internists are experts in managing severe chronic illnesses and complex situations, including when multiple health conditions affect a single patient.
- Diagnostic problem-solving:

They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle a wide array of conditions affecting internal organs like the heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver.
- Management of common diseases:

This includes conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and chronic lung disease.
- Inpatient and outpatient care:

They provide care in both outpatient settings (like an office) and inpatient hospital settings, often managing the transition between the two.
- Subspecialty training:

After their residency, they can choose to specialize further in areas like cardiology, endocrinology, or rheumatology, or practice as general internists or hospitalists.
- Performs other duties that may be assigned.
