Position Overview
The Coco Methyl Ester (CME) Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting chemical analyses and quality control tests on CME and related fuel products to ensure they meet corporate, industry, and regulatory standards. The role involves operating laboratory instruments, maintaining test accuracy, preparing analytical reports, and supporting production teams in ensuring consistent product quality.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sample Analysis & Product Testing
- Receive, prepare, and analyze CME and petroleum samples following standard test methods (ASTM, DOE, and company protocols).
Conduct chemical, physical, and performance tests using advanced analytical instruments such as:
Auto-Titrator
- Coulometric Karl Fischer
- Viscometer
- ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) Spectrometer
- Gas Chromatography (GC)
- UV-Vis Spectrophotometer
- Flash Point Tester
- Centrifuge and Density Meter
- Verify product conformance to established specifications and document any deviations for corrective action.
2. Quality Assurance & Process Control
- Monitor ongoing production batches of CME and biodiesel for adherence to process parameters and quality standards.
- Perform validation and verification of test results in accordance with ISO 9001 and DOE Biofuel Quality Standards.
- Participate in internal and external laboratory audits and maintain readiness for accreditation requirements.
3. Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments to ensure accurate and consistent results.
- Schedule regular preventive maintenance and report any malfunction or non-conformance immediately.
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain precise and complete laboratory records, test results, and instrument logs.
- Prepare analytical reports, graphs, and data summaries for submission to the Laboratory Supervisor and Quality Manager.
- Support research and development initiatives by documenting findings and trends.
5. Inventory & Laboratory Management
- Monitor laboratory chemical and reagent stock levels; initiate purchase requests as needed.
- Ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of chemical substances in compliance with environmental and safety standards.
6. Safety & Compliance
- Strictly adhere to laboratory safety policies, PPE protocols, and hazard communication standards.
- Conduct work in compliance with DOE, DENR, and company environmental regulations.
- Report unsafe conditions or potential hazards promptly to the Safety Officer.
7. Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with Production, Quality Assurance, and Technical teams for process optimization and continuous improvement.
- Communicate analytical findings and provide technical support to plant operations.
Key Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, or related field.
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of laboratory experience in petroleum, biofuel, or chemical manufacturing industries.
- Hands-on experience in Coco Methyl Ester (CME) testing, particularly on parameters such as acid value, water content, free glycerin, total glycerin, and ester content, is highly preferred.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining analytical instruments (Auto-Titrator, GC, ICP, UV-Vis, Viscometer, etc.).
- Knowledge of ASTM standards for fuel and biodiesel testing.
- Understanding of Quality Management Systems (QMS) and ISO 17025 laboratory standards.
- Familiarity with MS Office and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
