Telecom Designer - Duties & Responsibilities:

Planning & Design:

  • Develop detailed telecom network designs (fiber, copper, wireless, DAS, or hybrid systems)
  • Produce construction-ready drawings: layouts, schematics, risers, and details
  • Perform network capacity planning and route selection
  • Design outside plant (OSP) and/or inside plant (ISP) infrastructure
  • Create splice diagrams, fiber assignments, and cable routing plans

Engineering & Technical Analysis:

  • Conduct site surveys and field verifications
  • Analyze existing infrastructure and propose upgrades or expansions
  • Ensure designs comply with industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI, NEC, TEEE)
  • Perform loss budgets, signal calculations, and equipment placement analysis
  • Coordinate pole attachments, duct usage, and right-of-way constraints

Documentation & Deliverables:

  • Prepare design packages, drawings, and technical specifications
  • Develop Bill of Materials (BOM), cost estimates, and labor estimates
  • Maintain accurate as-built documentation
  • Review and update drawings based on field changes

Coordination & Collaboration:

  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and construction teams
  • Coordinate with utility companies, municipalities, and permitting authorities
  • Support permitting and regulatory submissions
  • Participate in design reviews and project meetings

Quality & Compliance:

  • Ensure designs meet client requirements, safety standards, and local codes
  • Conduct internal quality checks and peer reviews
  • Address constructability issues and design risks
  • Support troubleshooting during construction and installation

Tools & Software:

  • Use CAD/GIS tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • Utilize network design and fiber management software
  • Maintain design files and version control systems

Project Support:

  • Assist with project scheduling and milestones
  • Respond to RFIs and construction queries
  • Support testing, commissioning, and acceptance processes
  • Provide technical support during implementation
