Senior Tax Accountant

The Senior Tax Accountant is responsible for delivering high-quality tax compliance services to a diverse portfolio of clients. The role involves preparing and reviewing tax returns, assist with the tax planning, ensuring compliance with Australian taxation laws, and contributing to the firm's professional standards and client service excellence.
The Senior Tax Accountant also plays a key role in mentoring junior staff and supporting the leadership team in business development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance and Advisory
Prepare and review income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, and superannuation funds.
- Prepare and review Business Activity Statements (BAS), Instalment Activity Statements (IAS), and Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) returns.
- Prepare and review SGC statements, payroll, workcover.
- Review client's accounting files and able to determine and correct if any errors.
- Identify and manage tax risks and ensure compliance with Australian Taxation Office (ATO) regulations.
- Liaise with the ATO and other regulatory bodies on behalf of clients.
Client Management
Assist managers in maintaining relationships with clients through proactive communication of issues and addressing client queries.
- Respond promptly to client queries and provide clear, accurate, and commercially sound tax advice with the assistance of manager or partner.
Technical and Professional Development
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and best practices in tax compliance and advisory services.
Team Leadership
Supervise, mentor, and review the work of junior accountants.
- Provide regular feedback, training, and coaching to junior team members.
- Assist management with staff performance reviews as required.
Business Development
Identify opportunities to add value to existing clients.
- Assist with proposals and presentations for prospective clients.
Key Skills and Attributes
- Strong technical knowledge of Australian tax law, particularly in areas relating to companies, trusts, partnerships, and individuals.
- Exceptional attention to detail and high-level analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Strong client service and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in accounting and tax software (e.g., Xero, MYOB, or similar).
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Ability to mentor and develop junior staff.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in accounting (required).
- CPA qualification (desirable).
- Minimum 3–6 years' experience in Australian taxation and accounting.
- Experience dealing directly with clients, ATO correspondence, and managing a small team.
