A Senior Civil Engineer with solar experience is responsible for leading the civil and structural design for solar projects, including site grading, drainage, access roads, and foundations. Key duties include conducting site assessments, preparing technical drawings and specifications, collaborating with electrical engineers, overseeing construction, and ensuring compliance with regulations and codes. This senior-level role often involves managing multiple projects, mentoring junior staff, and coordinating with authorities and other stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and planning: Lead the civil and structural design for solar projects, which includes site layout, grading, drainage, erosion control, and access roads. Design foundations and other structural components for solar panel mounting systems.
  • Site assessment: Conduct site visits, surveys, and feasibility studies to evaluate site conditions and inform design decisions.
  • Technical documentation: Prepare and review technical drawings, specifications, bills of quantities (BOQs), reports, and cost estimates.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with electrical engineers, project managers, and construction teams to ensure seamless integration of civil and electrical works.
  • Construction oversight: Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with design, safety, and quality standards. Provide technical support during installation and commissioning phases.
  • Regulatory compliance: Ensure all designs and construction activities comply with local and national codes, standards, and regulations. Coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to obtain permits.
  • Project management: Manage project timelines, identify risks to milestones, and recommend corrective actions. Facilitate construction progress meetings and resolve site-level issues.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to junior civil and structural engineers and drafters.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Significant experience as a civil engineer, with specific experience in the design and construction of solar projects preferred.
  • Proficiency in civil engineering software, such as AutoCAD.
  • Strong knowledge of structural analysis and design principles, especially as they apply to solar installations.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
