• Adult primary care:They are trained to be a patient's primary point of contact for health concerns, managing their overall care over a lifetime.
• Complex disease management:Internists are experts in managing severe chronic illnesses and complex situations, including when multiple health conditions affect a single patient.
• Diagnostic problem-solving:They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle a wide array of conditions affecting internal organs like the heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver.
• Management of common diseases:This includes conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and chronic lung disease.
• Inpatient and outpatient care:They provide care in both outpatient settings (like an office) and inpatient hospital settings, often managing the transition between the two.
• Subspecialty training:After their residency, they can choose to specialize further in areas like cardiology, endocrinology, or rheumatology, or practice as general internists or hospitalists.
• Performs other duties that may be assigned.
