DISPENSING

The pharmacy assistant must be under the supervision of a pharmacist at all times. All dispensing functions performed by a pharmacy assistant must be carried out in accordance with provincial regulations and standards of practice.

  1. Receive written medicine requests for distribution and delivers requested medicines in the different stations and special areas of the hospital.

  2. Locate the medication, select the prescription container and count/pour the medication.

  3. Attach the label to the prescription container.

  4. Ensure that the original container, prescription container contents and label are checked and initialed by the pharmacist.

  5. Regularly phone customers for unclaimed prescriptions.

  6. To secure processing sheets together with return medications in all stations

  7. Pick up returned medicines on designated pick up times or as soon the nurses inform the pharmacy that there is a patient who has "may go home" orders

  8. Encodes all delivered and returned medicines.

  9. Handles patient's credit notes

PHARMACY OPERATIONS
Perform other tasks as outlined by the pharmacy manager or staff pharmacists. Generally, to include:

  1. Keep all areas of the pharmacy clean, neat and professional.

  2. Maintain adequate stock of pharmacy supplies.

  3. Answer the pharmacy telephone, with the exception of the doctor's line, which should be answered by a pharmacist. All doctors' calls and inquiries regarding prescriptions, copies, drug information and poisons, to be referred to a pharmacist.

  4. To ensure that the generic brand, brand, unit of measurement and price of medicines dispatched are correctly encoded in the bizbox system.

  5. Set up a schedule for outdated pharmaceuticals.

  6. Monitors inventory control.

  7. Assist with checking off and putting away pharmaceutical orders.

  8. Maintain stocks of pamphlets/consumer information.

  9. Maintain OTC/non-prescription sections, as designated.
