A telecom technician installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs telecommunications systems, including phone lines, internet, and fiber optic networks, by working with hardware and software like routers and switches. Key responsibilities include diagnosing technical faults, testing network performance, and documenting work, while ensuring safety and adhering to industry standards. They collaborate with clients and other technical staff to ensure seamless communication services. Core Responsibilities
- Installation: Install and configure telecommunications equipment, including fiber optics, copper cabling, wireless systems, routers, switches, and other network hardware.
- Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance on telecommunication systems to ensure optimal performance and prevent issues.
- Troubleshooting & Repair: Identify, diagnose, and repair technical faults in communication systems, replacing or repairing damaged components as needed.
- Testing & Diagnostics: Conduct diagnostic tests on circuits and equipment to verify functionality and performance.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of installations, maintenance, repairs, equipment inventory, and network diagrams.
- Customer Support: Interact with customers to understand their telecommunication needs, provide technical support, and train them on equipment usage.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere to safety standards, industry regulations, and legal codes while working.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of telecommunications systems, including voice and data networks, fiber optics, and network protocols like TCP/IP, VoIP, and SIP.
- Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues effectively.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with clients, project managers, and team members.
- Technical Skills: Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, program network devices, and use diagnostic tools.
- Education & Experience: An associate's degree in a related field or equivalent experience in telecommunications or computer science is often required.
