Job Summary

The role of Senior Database Administrator is critical in ensuring the design, performance tuning, security, availability, and overall management of the organization's database environment.

This includes ownership of production and non-production databases (on-premises and cloud), database architecture design, backup and recovery strategies, and optimization of database operations.

The Senior DBA also provides technical leadership, supports audits/compliance, and mentors junior DBAs and developers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Database Design and Optimization
    • Design and optimize database schemas, indexing strategies, and normalization/denormalization models.
    • Support solution architects and application teams in designing efficient data models.
    • Lead database standardization and enforce naming conventions and architecture principles.
  • Operations and Performance Management
    • Monitor and tune database performance (SQL, memory, CPU, I/O, locks).
    • Diagnose slow queries and optimize SQL code and stored procedures.
    • Ensure high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) strategies are implemented and tested.
  • Security, Compliance, and Auditing
    • Implement and manage data access controls, roles, and encryption.
    • Support internal/external audits and ensure compliance with data protection standards.
    • Maintain and monitor audit trails and data change logs.
  • Backup and Recovery
    • Own and maintain enterprise backup strategies (full, incremental, differential).
    • Regularly test database restore procedures and document recovery steps.
    • Ensure RPO/RTO targets are met for all critical systems.
    • Manage cloud-based databases (e.g., OCI) and hybrid deployments.
    • Work closely with development, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams.
    • Provide guidance to developers on database best practices.
    • Mentor junior DBAs and conduct knowledge-sharing sessions.
    Qualifications and Skills
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
    • 7+ years of experience in database administration and performance tuning.
    • Strong hands-on experience with Oracle, and additional DB systems is an advantage.
    • Deep understanding of database internals, indexing strategies, execution plans, and query optimization.
    • Experience with HA/DR configurations: AlwaysOn, clustering, replication, log shipping, etc.
    • Analytical mindset with strong attention to detail.
    • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
    • Strong written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Proactive and confident in high-pressure environments.
