Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets.

Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough initiatives like public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT.

The company boasts a globally distributed collaboration model with over 1100 colleagues across 75+ countries and minimal office-based roles.

Teams meet two to four times a year in person to align on strategy and execution.

We are hiring a Web/UI Engineer to develop a reliable user experience. These frontends are built using JS, CSS, React, and Flutter for Canonical's enterprise products.

To create consistency across our products and sites, we have a central team that builds an open-source React toolkit and presentation layer, the Vanilla Framework.

Flutter has the potential to unify desktop and web development, which we're growing exposure to and hiring for.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement well-tested and documented software in Web technologies or Flutter.
  • Debug and fix issues encountered by users.
  • Participate in code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate with community and colleagues on technical specifications.
  • Contribute to technical documentation.
  • Seek improvements to engineering and operations practices.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  • Contribute to product success through technical advocacy.

Requirements:
  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or an alternative narrative.
  • Drive and a track record of exceeding expectations.
  • Organized, self-starting, and able to deliver to schedule.
  • Professional manner in interacting with colleagues, partners, and community.
  • Experience designing and writing high-quality Web technologies.
  • Passion for Typescript, React, or Flutter.
  • An eye for accessibility and performance.
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Passion, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events.
Nice-to-have Skills:
  • Container tech experience (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Attention to detail concerning user-centric UI development.
  • REST API design, development, and governance experience.
  • Performance engineering and security expertise.
