Software Engineering Manager

About the Job

This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead a team of software engineers in delivering high-quality solutions for Linux kernel development. As a Software Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of our Linux distribution, ensuring it meets the needs of our users and stays competitive in the market.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in software engineering, with a strong background in Linux kernel internals and concepts. You will also need to demonstrate excellent leadership skills, with the ability to manage and motivate a team of engineers to achieve common goals.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about Linux and has a deep understanding of its complexities. If you are a seasoned manager with a track record of success in similar roles, we would love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a distributed team of software engineers in delivering Linux kernel solutions
  • Take ownership of specific aspects of Ubuntu Linux, including working with silicon or cloud partners, ensuring quality control standards, and mitigating security threats
  • Engage with other teams at Canonical, the open source community, and commercial partners
Requirements
  • Significant programming experience in C, with Python, Golang, or other like languages highly regarded
  • Substantial experience with operating system kernel internals and concepts, Linux highly regarded but not essential
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers
  • Ability to coordinate between multiple distinct teams of differing technical focus to achieve common goals
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git
  • Prior experience developing with software packaging formats, with direct Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience highly regarded
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long
