Job Summary:
The Medical Technologist performs a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. They work with clinical laboratory instruments and equipment to analyze biological samples (e.g., blood, urine, tissue) and provide accurate, timely results to physicians and healthcare providers. The role demands a high level of precision, technical expertise, and an understanding of clinical practices and safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform complex laboratory tests, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and immunology procedures.
Prepare and analyze biological specimens such as blood, urine, sputum, and tissue samples.
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
Calibrate instruments and ensure they meet quality control standards.
Analyze test results and report findings to physicians and healthcare professionals.
Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of specimens and laboratory materials in accordance with safety protocols.
Participate in quality assurance activities to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.
Prepare and maintain accurate laboratory documentation, including patient records and test reports.
Follow established laboratory policies and procedures to ensure safety and compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, OSHA).
Assist in training and mentoring junior laboratory staff or students as needed.
Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and order reagents and equipment when required.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field.
At least 1-2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred, though recent graduates may be considered.
Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, clinical laboratory instruments, and diagnostic techniques.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing laboratory tests.
Ability to handle and interpret complex test results.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with medical staff.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in a medical environment.
