Job Summary:
The Dialysis Nurse (RN) provides specialized care to patients undergoing dialysis treatment for chronic kidney disease (CKD), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or other renal disorders. The Dialysis Nurse is responsible for monitoring patients before, during, and after dialysis procedures, ensuring that treatments are performed safely and effectively. The role requires close coordination with nephrologists, technicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Dialysis Nurses also educate patients on their condition, the importance of adherence to treatment plans, and lifestyle modifications for better renal health.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Patient Assessment & Care
Assess patient condition: Conduct thorough pre-dialysis assessments, including reviewing vital signs, lab results, and physical condition
Monitor patients during dialysis: Observe patient responses during dialysis, monitoring vital signs, fluid balance, and complications such as hypotension or infection.
Administer medications: Administer prescribed medications before, during, and after dialysis as needed, including heparin or other anticoagulants to prevent clotting.
Post-treatment care: Assess patients after dialysis, monitor for any complications (e.g., hypotension, bleeding), and provide necessary interventions.

2. Dialysis Treatment Management
Prepare dialysis equipment: Set up and operate dialysis machines according to established protocols and patient needs.
Initiate and terminate dialysis treatments: Start and finish dialysis sessions, ensuring safe and effective fluid removal and toxin clearance.
Monitor dialysis machine: Ensure proper machine settings, fluid rates, and filters to guarantee effective dialysis.
Ensure proper access management: Maintain and monitor dialysis access sites (e.g., fistulas, grafts, central lines) to prevent complications like clotting or infection.

3. Patient Education & Support
Teach patients and families: Provide education on the dialysis process, diet restrictions, fluid management, medications, and the importance of regular treatments.
Supportive counseling: Offer emotional support to patients and their families, as dialysis can be physically and emotionally challenging.
Promote self-management: Teach patients how to manage their care at home when possible, including dietary recommendations and fluid restrictions.

4. Collaborative Care
Work with healthcare team: Collaborate with nephrologists, dietitians, social workers, and technicians to develop individualized care plans.
Monitor lab results: Track lab results such as potassium levels, creatinine, and albumin to help guide treatment decisions.
Communicate effectively: Regularly update physicians and other healthcare providers on patient status and any changes in condition or treatment needs.

5. Infection Control & Safety
Follow infection prevention protocols: Adhere to strict infection control standards, including sterile techniques, to prevent dialysis-related infections such as catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs).
Ensure patient safety: Monitor for signs of infection, complications, or adverse reactions related to dialysis and take appropriate action.
Maintain a safe environment: Ensure that all equipment is sanitized and functioning properly, and that the dialysis unit meets health and safety regulations.

6. Documentation & Record Keeping
Accurate charting: Document patient assessments, treatment details, complications, and post-dialysis progress in the patient’s medical record.
Monitor and record lab results: Keep detailed records of lab values, weight, fluid intake/output, and vital signs throughout treatment.
Track treatment history: Maintain accurate records of dialysis treatments, medications administered, and any complications or adjustments made during therapy.

7. Emergency Response & Complication Management
Respond to emergencies: Handle any emergency situations that arise during dialysis, including cardiac arrest, bleeding, or severe hypotension, by providing appropriate care and interventions.

Manage complications: Be prepared to address complications such as clotting of dialysis access, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, or electrolyte imbalances.

8. Professional Development & Compliance
Continuing education: Stay up-to-date with the latest advances in dialysis treatments, renal care, and patient management strategies.
Maintain licensure: Ensure current nursing licensure and certifications (e.g., BLS, ACLS), and attend required training for dialysis procedures and equipment.
Adhere to regulatory guidelines: Comply with all healthcare regulations and facility policies, including those related to dialysis treatment and patient care.

Qualifications:
Education:
Nursing degree (Associate's or Bachelor's).
Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN) license.
Certification: Certified Nephrology Nurse (CNN) or Certified Dialysis Nurse (CDN).

Experience:
Experience in dialysis nursing or a clinical setting (hospital, outpatient dialysis clinic) is preferred.
Knowledge and experience in renal disease management, dialysis treatments, and patient care is a plus.

Skills & Abilities:
Strong understanding of renal disease, dialysis procedures, and related medications.
Ability to operate dialysis machines and monitor patient vitals and fluid balance.
Compassionate, patient-centered approach with excellent communication skills.
Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to address complications as they arise.
Ability to educate and support patients and families in managing chronic kidney disease and dialysis treatments.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and move patients or assist with patient mobility.
Ability to stand, walk, and be active during long shifts.
Manual dexterity for handling dialysis equipment and patient care tasks.
Ability to wear protective gear (e.g., gloves, masks) when required.
