The Licensed Radiologic Technologist operates diagnostic imaging equipment, such as X-ray machines, CT scanners, and MRI machines, to capture high-quality images for diagnostic purposes. The role requires expertise in patient care, radiologic procedures, and safety standards, ensuring that images are accurate and of the highest quality while maintaining patient comfort and safety. Radiologic Technologists collaborate with physicians and healthcare professionals to provide diagnostic insights that guide medical treatments and interventions.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Patient Preparation & Care
Assess patient needs: Review patient history and physician orders to determine the appropriate imaging procedure.
Prepare patients for imaging procedures: Explain procedures to patients, answer questions, and ensure they are positioned correctly and comfortably.
Ensure patient safety: Monitor and maintain patient well-being throughout the imaging process, particularly with regard to exposure to radiation.
Assist in immobilizing patients: If needed, help stabilize patients to ensure proper positioning for clear, accurate images.
2. Radiologic Imaging
Operate imaging equipment: Set up and operate X-ray, CT, MRI, or other radiologic imaging devices according to the physician's orders.
Position patients correctly: Adjust the patient and imaging equipment to capture high-quality images that allow for clear diagnostic results.
Ensure quality control: Perform diagnostic imaging procedures with high standards of accuracy, minimizing radiation exposure while obtaining optimal images.
3. Image Review & Documentation
Evaluate images: Review captured images to ensure they meet quality standards before sending them to the physician for analysis.
Ensure accuracy: Double-check that patient information is correctly linked to the images for proper documentation.
Maintain records: Accurately document procedures, patient information, and imaging results in patient charts or electronic health records (EHR).
4. Radiation Safety & Compliance
Adhere to safety protocols: Follow all radiation safety procedures to minimize exposure to patients, staff, and self.
Use protective equipment: Properly utilize lead aprons, shields, and other safety equipment to protect patients and self from unnecessary radiation exposure.
Maintain certifications and training: Stay up-to-date with state and federal regulations regarding radiation safety, including compliance with the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle.
5. Collaboration & Communication
Work with healthcare teams: Collaborate with physicians, radiologists, and other medical professionals to review and discuss images, determine additional tests, or adjust care plans as needed.
Provide patient updates: Communicate imaging results and patient status with physicians or radiologists in a timely and accurate manner.
Assist in procedure preparation: Prepare and assist physicians in specialized imaging procedures like biopsies or catheter placements if applicable.
6. Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Perform routine maintenance: Regularly inspect and maintain imaging equipment to ensure proper functioning.
Troubleshoot equipment issues: Identify and report any malfunctions with imaging equipment and coordinate repairs or maintenance.
Ensure cleanliness: Maintain the cleanliness and sterility of imaging equipment and patient care areas.
7. Professional Development
Stay current with advancements: Participate in continuing education, attend workshops, and renew certifications to remain current with advancements in radiology and imaging technology.
Pursue additional certifications: Depending on the job setting, additional certifications in CT, MRI, or other specialties may be encouraged or required.
Qualifications:
Education:
Graduate of an accredited radiologic technology program (Associate's degree or equivalent).
Licensure/Certifications:
Current licensure as a Radiologic Technologist (RT)
Experience:
Prior experience in radiologic imaging (clinical or hospital experience preferred).
Experience in operating X-ray, CT, MRI, or other diagnostic imaging equipment may be required, depending on the facility.
Skills & Abilities:
Strong knowledge of radiologic technology, anatomy, and positioning techniques.
Ability to explain imaging procedures clearly to patients and ease their concerns.
Proficient in operating imaging equipment and troubleshooting technical issues.
High attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate patient records.
Strong communication skills to work with patients, physicians, and other medical staff.
Ability to remain calm in emergency situations and respond quickly.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and move patients, sometimes in awkward or difficult positions.
Ability to stand or sit for long periods during procedures.
Ability to operate radiologic equipment and assist with patient positioning.
Good manual dexterity for handling equipment and managing patient care.
Ability to wear protective lead equipment for extended periods.
