About This Job

As a member of the Quality Engineering team, the Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) designs, develops, and maintains scalable test software and automation frameworks that validate Axos core banking capabilities across Web UI, APIs, databases, mobile applications, and integrated services. The SDET applies software engineering practices to improve testability, reliability, and delivery speed throughout the software development lifecycle. This role partners closely with Product, Development, DevOps, Project, and Production Support teams to define quality strategies, prevent defects, and deliver secure, resilient, and maintainable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Works as part of an Agile cross-functional team to define the test strategy, acceptance criteria, and automation approach for new features and enhancements.
  • Designs, develops, reviews, and maintains reliable automated tests and reusable test components using sound software engineering principles.
  • Builds and evolves automation frameworks, test utilities, data-management solutions, and service mocks that support Web UI, API, database, integration, and mobile testing.
  • Integrates automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and establishes fast, actionable quality feedback at appropriate stages of delivery.
  • Reviews requirements, architecture, technical designs, and code changes to identify risks, improve testability, and prevent defects early.
  • Develops effective functional, integration, contract, regression, and end-to-end tests based on product and technical risk.
  • Investigates test failures and production defects using logs, queries, traces, and other diagnostic data; documents findings and partners with engineers through resolution.
  • Improves automation reliability, execution time, maintainability, observability, and coverage while reducing flaky tests and redundant manual validation.
  • Contributes to coding standards, peer reviews, technical documentation, and engineering practices for quality-related code and tooling.
  • Uses quality metrics and defect trends to identify systemic risks and recommend improvements to product design, development, testing, and release processes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in software development, quality engineering, or test automation, including ownership of production-grade automated test solutions.
  • Strong programming skills in JavaScript or TypeScript; experience with an additional language such as Java, C#, or Python is preferred.
  • Experience designing or extending test automation frameworks using tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium WebDriver, Appium, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience testing REST APIs and distributed integrations, including authentication, data validation, error handling, and service contracts.
  • Proficiency in writing and troubleshooting SQL queries in Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience integrating automated tests with source control, build systems, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Working knowledge of software design, object-oriented or modular programming, data structures, debugging, and code-review practices.
  • Strong understanding of Agile delivery, the software development lifecycle, test levels, risk-based testing, and defect-prevention practices.
  • Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical risks and influence quality decisions across teams.

Additional Qualifications

  • Financial services, fintech, or consumer banking experience, including familiarity with security, privacy, auditability, and regulatory expectations.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, containerized environments, service virtualization, messaging systems, or microservice architectures.
  • Experience with performance, accessibility, security, resilience, or reliability testing.
  • Experience using observability and diagnostic tools for logs, metrics, traces, and production troubleshooting.
  • Experience with low-code/no-code automation tools and the judgment to select code-based or low-code approaches appropriately.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor peers, champion engineering standards, and drive continuous improvement across teams.

Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Applies an engineering mindset to quality by building maintainable solutions, designing for testability, and addressing root causes rather than relying on repetitive manual validation.
  • Demonstrates strong coding, debugging, systems-thinking, and problem-solving skills across user interfaces, services, databases, and integrated
