  • A Truck Automotive Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the mechanical and electrical systems of trucks and heavy-duty vehicles. Their key duties typically include:
  • Diagnosing Issues: Using diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical, electrical, and engine problems in trucks.
  • Repairing and Replacing Parts: Performing repairs or replacing worn or damaged components, such as engines, brakes, transmissions, tires, and suspension systems.
Requirements

Education:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a formal training program in automotive or diesel technology from an accredited school is often preferred. Some employers may offer on-the-job training.

Experience:

  • Previous experience working as an automotive or diesel mechanic, or in a related field, is often required.
  • Experience working specifically with heavy-duty trucks and diesel engines is beneficial.

Skills:

  • Mechanical Knowledge: Proficient in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining truck systems, including engines, brakes, suspension, exhaust, and electrical systems.
  • Diagnostic Skills: Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical, electrical, and computer-related issues in trucks.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to identify issues and determine the best solutions.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring all repairs are performed accurately and safely, adhering to industry standards.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to use hand tools and machinery, as well as lift heavy components when necessary.

Certifications:

  • Certification from organizations such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), especially in diesel mechanics, is often preferred.
  • Other relevant certifications (e.g., brake, engine repair, or electrical) may be beneficial.
