Gender Inclusive Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment

2. Summary of Job Description
Climate change has an outsize impact on those who have contributed least to it, particularly women and girls form marginalized communities, exacerbating existing gender inequalities and reversing hard-won progress. As such, integrating gender analysis and intersectional considerations into Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessments (CRVAs) is essential to ensure that adaptation strategies are inclusive and equitable. CRVAs are critical for understanding the effects of climate change, identifying hazards, and assessing the vulnerabilities of people, sectors or ecosystems. They inform adaptation strategies designed to mitigate risks and enhance resilience. However, CRVA methodologies vary widely across organizations and agencies, with no unified approach. Some CRVA are gender blind, relying primarily on remote sensing and/or quantitative analyses to measure impacts and identify solutions. Others prioritize participatory and inclusive approaches that recognize place-based nature of climate impacts and adaptation strategies. Still others blend approaches, seeking a balance benefits of data driven analyses with the insights gained form community engagement and local knowledge. 
ADB's Gender Equality Division (CCGE) seeks an intern to focus on the following tasks: 
a) Map various CRVA tools developed/used by different organizations, including MDBs, UN agencies, I/NGOs, and governments leading in climate change adaptation efforts, with a particular emphasis on global practices and those in ADB's Developing Member Countries (DMCs) in Central and West Asia region (CWA). 
b) Assess these tools from a gender and intersectional lens 
c) Identify good practices, with special attention to context and climate challenges in CWA. 
d) Provide actionable recommendations for ADB to enhance CRVA tools, where needed, in order to better integrate gender and inclusion considerations in climate adaptation efforts in CWA. 
The intern will consult internally in carrying out these tasks, including across CCGE and with climate change colleagues.

Duration: 8-11 weeks
Timing: June 2025 onwards

• 1 summary report outlining approach and findings 

• 1 internal presentation to ADB 

• 1 draft blog 
Deliverables will be closely guided by supervisors, as well as consulted with wider CCGE 
and climate change colleagues

Qualifications

6. Education Requirements
Currently enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program in Climate Change, Environmental Science, Gender Studies, International Public 
Policy, and/or other relevant socials science disciplines. Must have taken courses on climate change with gender equality as a focus 
area.

7. Relevant Experience and Other Requirements

• Strong interest in climate change adaptation, gender and inclusion. 

• Good research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize relevant publications and/or quantitative and qualitative data. 

• Knowledge of gender and climate issues in Central West Asia would be a plus but not a requirement. 

• Fluency in written and oral English is required, proficiency in regional languages (e.g. Russian) is advantageous. 

• Willingness to work independently while accepting guidance and feedback from supervisor and other ADB staff is required.
