To learn more: Position Summary Sony Corporation of America (SCA) is seeking an Attorney, Privacy to join the Sony Group Corporation Digital Transformation group’s Data Enablement team. This position will be based in one of the San Diego, Culver City, or San Mateo offices and may require travel to those offices approximately once per month. The role reports to the Sr Counsel/Privacy Officer, Sony Group Corporation, Privacy Section, and is part of the team responsible for establishing and maintaining an enterprise vision, strategy, and program to secure Sony’s information assets and protect the privacy of its customers and employees. This is a hybrid role requiring 2 days per week in the office in San Diego, LA, or San Mateo. Job Responsibilities Initiates and conducts efforts aimed at promoting and ensuring compliance with global privacy rules and other privacy program requirements, focusing on future technologies such as data transformation initiatives, cross-group affiliate data sharing and customer marketing, and account consolidation/unified ID. Consults and coordinates with Sony group legal departments and outside counsel on local legal requirements, regulatory filings for international data protection authorities, and European Works Councils, in collaboration with the Sr Counsel/Privacy Officer. Partners with appropriate teams to enhance governance, controls, and documentation, and address findings. Maintains knowledge of applicable privacy laws, regulations, and standards, and monitors advancements in information privacy technologies. Provides advice, conducts privacy impact assessments, and supports privacy initiatives across the company as a privacy subject‑matter expert. Supports the Sr. Counsel (Privacy Officer) and Privacy Section with reporting on global privacy projects and initiatives. Demonstrates honesty, trustworthiness, and ethical conduct—key requirements for the responsibilities outlined above. Qualifications A J.D. degree and membership in good standing in at least one state bar. Between 5–8 years of related, practical legal experience in a law firm or corporate environment, including direct experience applying U.S. and non‑U.S. privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines in a business context. In‑house experience in a multinational corporation or top‑tier law firm strongly preferred. Minimum of 5 years’ demonstrable experience in operationalizing data privacy, in compliance, legal, information security, information technology, or consulting roles. Hands‑on privacy experience and certifications such as CIPP or CIPT strongly preferred. Involvement in global cross‑company privacy programs and/or initiatives, including GDPR. Experience drafting privacy compliance language and documentation for consumer products or services. Experience providing practical advice on privacy‑enhancing technologies through privacy impact assessments. Exceptional communication and advocacy skills, with the ability to explain complex issues in understandable language to Sony employees and clients. Collaborative team player with excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills. Ability to work and communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels of executives. Ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and respond to emergencies. Ability to travel internationally as required, up to 20 %.
