JOB CODE: 713 PAY RATE: $18.79 TO $20.32 (Positions are typically filled at entry level pay) JOB GRADE: 108 FLSA: Non-Exempt (Hourly) Job Overview The Marshall County Personnel Board is currently accepting applications for a Corrections Sergeant position in the Sheriff's Department. The Corrections Sergeant will supervise corrections officers assigned to the shift, assist the administrator as needed, review paperwork and actions of subordinates, provide staff training, and recommend disciplinary action. In addition, the position is responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates, including admission, release, guarding, and ensuring all inmate needs are met during detention. Essential Job Functions Supervise corrections officers and oversee jail operations for assigned shifts. Plan, organize, and coordinate the work of corrections officers. Assist staff by answering questions and handling unusual or difficult situations. Review logs and other paperwork from shift. Provide orientation and training for new correctional officers. Interpret and apply personnel policies, departmental policies, and other relevant procedures. Correct minor work problems and counsel correctional officers. Prepare and review performance appraisals and discuss them with subordinates. Recommend disciplinary action when needed. Assist jail administrator with reports, schedules, time and leave reports, and payroll data. File new warrants. Perform intake and release of prisoners following established procedures. Search incoming inmates for weapons, valuables, or drugs. Conduct strip searches and logs related property. Delouse incoming inmates. Fingerprint and photograph inmates. Classify inmates and assign them to appropriate cells. Lock inmates in cells after search is complete. Administer prisoner questionnaires (initial intake, medical, psychological, property, etc.). Maintain custody, discipline, and welfare of inmates. Conduct roll call. Distribute and collect mail from inmates. Supervise general population and lockdown showers as needed. Distribute and pick up razors, pencils, clothing, etc. Process inmate request forms such as for medical services. Inspect cells for evidence of tampering. Observe inmate activity in person and on circuit monitors. Escort inmates to and from investigation. Organize work details. Serve meals to inmates. Brief incoming staff on shift events. Read and sign all log and activity sheets. Announce church call. Assist nurse at pill call. Check suicidal inmates and address special needs inmates. Search cells for contraband. Transport inmates to video kiosk on visitation days. Occasionally transport prisoners outside the facility for lawyer visits, court appearances, etc. Complete logs or paperwork as required. Fingerprint the public for permits. Require regular and prompt attendance and the ability to work well as a team. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses or Certifications: Certification in Basic Jail Management. Special Requirements: Individuals hired without in-house First Line Supervisory training will be required to complete the training. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures Manual. Knowledge of proper use of handcuffs and mace. Knowledge of correctional practices and procedures. Knowledge of federal, state, and county rules, regulations, policies, and laws related to jail operation. Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Ability to read and comprehend written materials and instructions. Ability to write to complete forms and reports. Ability to communicate effectively orally. Ability to understand oral instructions. Ability to control or subdue another individual with or without assistance. Physical Demands: The work requires exertion of more than 100 pounds of force occasionally or more than 50 pounds of force to move objects. Requires balancing, crouching, crawling, walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, manual dexterity, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, mental acuity, speaking, hearing at normal levels, visual acuity for computer terminals and reading documents, and the ability to complete assigned tasks accurately. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a secured facility with inmates, extended periods in enclosed spaces, high noise levels, and a physically threatening environment that may involve crisis situations. Exposure to communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens is possible. Rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and potential overtime are required.
