JOB SUMMARY The Accountant ensures the accuracy, compliance, and integrity of the client’s financial records through effective review, oversight, and reporting. This role focuses on verifying, supervising, and improving the financial data processed by the Finance Assistant, ensuring that all accounts are accurate, reconciled, compliant, and audit‑ready. They also support the Financial Controller and CFO with management reporting, payroll review, forecasting, and analysis to enable informed business decisions. WHAT YOU’LL DO Oversight & Quality Control Review all supplier, subcontractor, and customer invoices processed by the Finance Assistant for accuracy and completeness. Verify correct coding, GST treatment, PO linkage, and cost‑centre allocation. Conduct regular spot checks and variance reviews across AP, AR, and reconciliations. Identify errors or exceptions, provide feedback, and ensure corrective action is taken. Ensure all processing and payments meet Empower’s cut‑off and approval standards. Prepare monthly Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports. Complete variance analysis and commentary for management review. Post and review journals for accruals, prepayments, depreciation, and adjustments. Oversee month‑end close to ensure all reconciliations are completed by the 5th business day. Support annual audit preparation, providing schedules and documentation. Compliance, Tax & Payroll Prepare and review BAS, IAS, Payroll Tax, and Superannuation returns. Maintain ATO and statutory compliance records and assist with external audits. Oversee Employment Hero Payroll processing for accuracy, including onboarding, terminations, allowances, and superannuation. Reconcile payroll and superannuation to the general ledger and ensure entitlements are correctly accrued. Support compliance with Fair Work and ATO STP 2 requirements. Prepare monthly payroll cost and leave liability summaries for management review. Systems & Process Improvement Maintain accuracy across Xero, Orbis, and Hubdoc integrations. Troubleshoot recurring data or reconciliation issues and implement preventative actions. Identify and implement workflow or automation improvements to enhance reporting speed and data integrity. Maintain and update process documentation for all Finance Division 3 procedures. Supervision & Support Provide day‑to‑day coaching and support to the Finance Assistant (Geraldine). Ensure tasks, checklists, and reconciliations are completed accurately and on time. Monitor performance, provide structured feedback, and elevate persistent issues to the Financial Controller. Approve payment runs, journals, and adjustments within delegated limits. Cash Flow, Costing & Forecasting Support preparation of weekly and monthly cash flow forecasts. Review project cost allocations to ensure alignment with budgets and job costing. Assist in preparing rolling financial forecasts and variance commentary for management. Monitor cash flow and report on upcoming liabilities and funding needs. Compliance Calendar & Reporting Governance Maintain the Finance Division 3 compliance calendar covering BAS, IAS, Super, Payroll Tax, and audit deadlines. Ensure all reporting obligations are tracked, assigned, and completed within required timelines. Maintain organised, audit‑ready digital files and supporting documentation. Continuous Improvement & Internal Controls Participate in internal control and finance process reviews to strengthen efficiency and risk management. Contribute to the development and update of finance‑related policies and procedures. Lead small improvement projects such as supplier portal setup, expense automation, or workflow digitisation. Support data accuracy and transparency across finance systems through regular health checks. REQUIREMENTS Core Competencies Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of Australian standards. Experienced in Xero, Employment Hero Payroll, Orbis, and Excel reporting. Analytical and detail‑oriented with a focus on data integrity. Effective communicator and capable coach with strong interpersonal skills. Proactive and process‑driven, with a mindset for continuous improvement. Qualifications & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline (CPA/CA desirable). Minimum 3 years’ accounting experience in a similar role. Experience supervising or reviewing transactional finance staff. Experience in the construction industry or a related field preferred. Proficiency with Xero, Employment Hero Payroll, Excel, and cloud‑based accounting systems.
