Reference and Instruction Librarian

Reference and Instruction Librarian at Samuel Merritt University — responsibilities include coordinating teaching, training, and creation of tutorials for stakeholders; reference and outreach services; selection and integration of electronic resources within the curriculum and research arenas; ongoing assessment of library services; and promoting curriculum-integrated use of high-quality open educational resources relevant to health sciences instruction. Works with the Director in support of strategic planning and participates in divisional and university-wide planning efforts; coordinates with the Director and other staff to create, prioritize, and implement library goals and objectives.

Duties And Responsibilities

• 40% Coordination of Teaching and Training
  • Coordinates teaching and training efforts within the department and across campuses to facilitate the coordinated use of innovative resources and teaching methods
  • Identifies and utilizes internal and external software and conferences for professional development opportunities for staff to maintain and develop teaching and training skills
  • Works with a team of librarians and faculty to initiate, redesign, and develop collaborative courses, modules, spaces, and research that support active learning pedagogy and curriculum design
  • Develops, manages, administers, and evaluates information literacy tutorials for incoming students
• 40% Instruction and Reference
  • Prepares for and instructs, through traditional classroom, distance education modes, and standalone sessions
  • Develops and updates library instructional and promotional materials using a variety of technologies based on usage statistics, user feedback, and new resource rollout
  • Provides research guidance to students and faculty both individually and in groups, including one weekly evening shift
  • Outreach to faculty, librarians, and academic technology staff to identify high-quality resources, including open educational resources and other low-cost materials, to meet program and course learning outcomes
  • Improve or develop services with inclusion in mind, reducing barriers to learning and fostering belonging among all library clientele
• 20% External Relations
  • Actively participate on committees in division and University in a positive and professional manner
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience

• MLS from an ALA-accredited program
• Previous experience equivalent to two full academic years as a professional librarian in an academic or health science library

Physical Requirements

• Ability to focus on complex tasks for prolonged periods of time to complete tasks and projects
• Ability to understand and communicate complex ideas verbally and in writing
