The Coding Educator is responsible for administering medical coding training modules according to approved Conifer curricula. They are also responsible for ensuring that trainees are able to successfully apply their learning in an operations environment, audit the work of newly-trained employees, and respond to coding questions escalated by the team. They are expected to abide by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by AHIMA.

Responsibilities and Duties

The following responsibilities and duties (50%):

· Creates, designs and performs coding education

· Administers Conifer-approved medical coding training modules as part of the Conifer Coding University.

o Credentials or Certifications appropriate for patient type, ie AHIMA, AAPC

· Conduct Induction Trainings on New hires from Day 2 – 5

· Successfully train coders for credentials or certifications appropriate for patient type, ie AHIMA, AAPC, with an average training pass rate of =>90% per batch. The pass rate is the number of trainees who passed training divided by the number of overall trainees. This is a measure of the Coding Educator's success as a trainer.

Does not meet = 90% pass rateExceeds >90% pass rate · Educator will stay current with AHA Official Coding and Reporting Guidelines, CMS, and other agency directives for ICD-10-CM,PCS coding and CPT. Attends mandatory coding seminars on an annual basis (IPPS/OPPS, ICD-10-CM and CPT updates). Quarterly review of AHA Coding Clinic. Attends Quarterly Coding Updates and all coding conference calls. (20%) · Communicates and resolves training issues for appropriate follow-up and resolution (20%) · Attends Conifer coding educations and maintains coding credentials (10%) · Other duties as assigned Functional Area Outcomes and Expectations

· Responsible for training new and tenured medical coders, reviewing the work of newly trained medical coders, and responding to coding queries from coding teams; while abiding by all ethical requirements.

· Proficient in training delivery to adult learners, taking into account cultural specificity of training class.

· Proficient in diagnosis coding guidelines, including facility-specific rules and regulations, Coding Clinics, and other relevant standards.

· Ability to assign corresponding PCS codes and CPT codes as applicable

· Working knowledge of the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) and Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) as applicable.

· Adept at comparing documentation, code, procedure, APC and/or DRG assignment for accuracy and completeness, and elevating concerns to the appropriate manager

· Functional knowledge of facility EMR, encoder and other support software

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by the duties of the position

· Ability to concentrate and accomplish tasks with explicit accuracy

· Ability to use office equipment and automated systems/applications/software at an acceptable level of proficiency

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required Experience: Three to five years of experience performing medical record coding in acute care setting, and three years of experience in performing medical coder training.

Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or related Allied Health discipline.

Preferred Education: Master's degree preferred

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: AHIMA CCS, RHIT, or RHIA, or AAPC Certification appropriate to patient type.

Preferred Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer, AAPC Certified Instructor

Required Computer Applications: Skilled and advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and others as required

Physical Requirements: Must be able to work in sitting position, use computer and answer telephone. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision
