Purpose of the Position

The primary role of the Structural Team Lead, SMEC Philippines is to provide structural/bridge engineering leadership to the structural/bridge design team to support SMEC operations in the Philippines (and overseas if required), under the direction of the Transport Manager, SMEC Philippines. In addition, the role includes related tasks such as assisting with EOI and Proposal preparation, mentoring of staff and constantly maintaining updated technical knowledge.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day to day leadership of the structural design team, including monitoring and checking all structural design work, and allocation of tasks to meet project programs and budgets
  • Spearhead Implementation of Quality Assurance and Quality Management System
  • Oversee and mentor structural design engineers where required and certify all structural engineering designs and drawings as required by legislation in the Philippines
  • Provide professional and competent structural engineering services across a wide range of structures, including bridges, culverts, sign gantries, and retaining structures. Experience and ability to provide services in other structures such as ports, railways, dams, tunnelling and hydraulic structures will be an advantage. The services would include field work, analysis, design and reporting
  • Analysis and design of all structural elements from foundations to above ground works across a range of materials including concrete (both reinforced and pre/post tensioned), steel and timber
  • Provide clear and concise reports related to design, feasibility studies and investigations in accordance with client requirements
  • Oversee and manage CADD and drafting staff in relation to structural design

General Responsibilities:

  • Assist with business development, by assisting in the preparation of EOIs, proposals and capability statements
  • Assist with identifying and securing new work opportunities for SMEC Philippines
  • Develop and maintain confidence in the capability of the team for internal (SMEC) and external clients through provision of quality structural solutions
  • Monitor project compliance with regard to the company's QA and BMS procedures
  • Perform other tasks that may be assigned from time to time by the Deputy Transport Manager, SMEC Philippines.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Recognized Engineering Degree (Civil or Structural)
  • Previous experience leading structural/bridge design teams
  • At least 15 years professional experience with minimum 5 years' experience in structural/bridge design on transport projects in the Philippines geographic footprint
  • Proficiency in the use of structural design software such as STADD Pro, SAP, MIDAS, ACES and SAM etc.
  • Experience in Seismic /Earthquake Analysis and Design of bridges and structures
  • Some previous experience of working in an Australian design environment using Australian design codes and international best practice will be an advantage
  • A good understanding of major transport project delivery methods
  • Ability to communicate (oral and in writing) effectively in English to furnish reports and to assist with the preparation of business development materials including EOIs and proposals
  • Demonstrated technical ability and understanding of projects budgets
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a member of a team and to prioritize own work load and that of the team to meet tight deadlines
