Reporting to the Technical Director and the Director of Production & Artistic Administration the duties of the Head Carpenter shall include, but not be limited to the co-ordination of the Set Construction Department and the manufacture of all scenic elements as specified in the designs. The Head Carpenter is responsible for disbursement of the assigned budget and delegation of work required for the efficient operation of the Department. They shall produce construction drawings for all scenery; liaise with designers regarding details and finishing techniques as specified in the designs, liaise with other departments to coordinate, and accomplish the timely completion of finishing techniques. They shall be responsible for the care and maintenance of shop equipment, ensure that all scenery is constructed and rigged to ensure safe installation and use at the performance venue. They shall plan and manage pack, load in, load out, and onstage set notes.

Qualifications:


• Preference will be given to candidates who have five or more years of professional work experience in a shop/theatre environment;

• Advanced proficiency in scenic construction; working with wood, metal, and other materials;

• Experience Leading a crew, 5+ Carpenters;

• Able to follow organizational safety policies, maintains a clean, organized and safe workshop, tools and storage areas;

• Determines safe construction methods and working loads;

• Comprehensive knowledge of theatrical practices;

• Superior communication and organizational skills;

• Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills;

• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, and independently;

• Positive attitude and self motivated;

• Good interpersonal skills, and courteous with staff, artists, vendors, and partners;

• Ability to interpret set design drawings and communicate required changes;

• Experience with Vectorworks drafting software is an asset;

• Ability to work periodically during evenings and weekends; and

• A current BC driver's license is an asset.

Remuneration:

$36.59 per hour plus benefits in accordance with IATSE Local 168 collective agreement with Pacific Opera Victoria
