Job Description

Summary of Work Activities and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the General Physics Laboratory Coordinator and Chair of the Department of Physics, the Assistant Laboratory Technician I supports daily operations of the department and performs tasks to maintain the efficient operation of the department's laboratories and machine shop.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
I. Coordinates with Physics laboratory users (faculty, students research assistants and graduate assistants) in preparing set-ups for researchactivities

  • Sets up equipment and materials, as approved by faculty, to be used in laboratory experiments
  • Checks availability of equipment and tests for safety use
  • Assists in the fabrication of research tools at the machine shop
  • Allocates equipment and materials needed for experiments
  • Assists in ensuring that laboratory safety procedures are followed

II. Assists faculty and researchers during classes and scheduled experiments

  • Performs calibration of equipment based on the instructions or standard protocols
  • Sets up equipment and materials, as approved by faculty, to be used in scheduled laboratory class experiments
  • Lends and logs equipment and materials to students and faculty during lab classes

III. Assists in the upkeep and overall maintenance of laboratories and the machine
shop

  • Assists in tracking consumables and hardware and makes requests for purchases when needed
  • Assists in purchasing parts (electronic or mechanical) needed for repairs as approved by the General Physics Laboratory Coordinator or the Chair
  • Provides recommendations for laboratory improvements and presents proposals with quotations when needed
  • Drafts incident reports detailing accidents and similar untoward incidents in the laboratory
  • Facilitates and documents the lending equipment and materials to students and faculty, including inter-department situations
  • Ensures good working conditions in the machine shop through the proper storage and maintenance of equipment and tools
  • Contacts service providers for repair and maintenance needs

IV. Performs other duties assigned by the General Physics Laboratory Coordinator
or by the Chair

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have familiarity with laboratory teaching equipment.
  • Must have computer and computer related equipment troubleshooting
  • skills.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to use word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Must be able to work well individually or as part of a team.
  • Must be willing to learn new skills.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of a 4-year college degree course in the field of Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electronics or otherrelated fields
  • Some experience with laboratory equipment is required.
