Summary Of Work Activities And Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Department Chair and the Laboratory Coordinator, the Laboratory Technician Iis responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of the Environmental Science (ES) Laboratories (e.g., Manila Observatory, CTC and the SEC buildings).

Main Duties And Responsibilities

I. Laboratory Management and Field Work Support

Orients laboratory users on laboratory policies on the use of laboratory facilities, equipment, and safety protocolsPerforms demonstration on the proper use and application of different laboratory and field equipmentPrepares, sets-up, and maintains laboratory facilities, equipment, and materials for classes and other laboratory activitiesSets-up required instruments, materials, teaching aids, and apparatus for classes, experiments, etc.Monitors reservation and releasing of required laboratory materials and equipment, following set guidelinesAssists in setting-up audio-visual equipment for class presentation and post laboratory activities, when neededConducts regular inventory of glasswares, chemicals/reagents, laboratory and field equipment, and other supplies and materialsAssists in on/off-campus field work and in laboratory analysis activities of thesis studentsSecures and dispenses required chemicals and materials for experimentsAssists in preparing and accomplishing required fieldwork forms/documents and in ensuring safety during field activitiesAssists in setting-up perimeter and maintaining and calibrating field equipmentAttends to the general upkeep and maintenance within the laboratory premises and coordinates with the assigned maintenance personnel to ensure cleanliness and orderlinessPerforms regular cleaning of the Department’s refrigerators/freezers.Diagnoses and calibrates specialized laboratory and field equipment, and documents accordinglyPerforms fabrication and simple repair of laboratory equipment or electrical concerns, in coordination with authorized personnel
II. Administrative Support

Assists in preparing and distributing documents and materials to/from the different department/offices inside the campusProvides necessary documents for the annual budget proposal and procurement of laboratory supplies and materialsCoordinates with the faculty and research proponents for the equipment needed to be prioritized for the next school yearConducts inventory and contacts potential suppliers to gather/evaluate quotations for the laboratory, in coordination with the Central Purchasing Office, Office of the Vice President for Digital Information and Technology Services (OVP-DITS), and other relevant officesAssists in off-campus procurement activities of laboratory materialsCoordinates with the Department of Chemistry for the procurement of Philippine National Police (PNP) and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) controlled chemicalsCoordinates with the authorized department/personnel for proper waste management and disposal of hazardous chemicals/substancesPrepares required reports/documents in relation to scheduled departmental and university evaluation and accreditation, compliances, etc.
III. Performs all other tasks assigned by the immediate supervisor and authorized representatives

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in ScienceAt least 1 year of relevant work experienceWork experience in laboratory procedures (i.e.., use, maintenance, and repair of instruments for physical/ chemical/ biological methods and procedures)Work experience in performing laboratory assistance to students, faculty, and researchersWork experience in handling of audio-visual equipment

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Laboratory Work, Operation, and Management: Knowledge and skills in laboratory procedures, operation, and maintenance; Knowledge of management (including procurement and disposal) of stock inventory of laboratory chemicals, consumables and instruments; Knowledge of chemical standard preparation and demonstration of equipmentTechnological Savvy: Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications; Knowledge in hardware and software troubleshooting, an advantageAttention to Detail: Being careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasksCustomer and Personal Service: Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
